West Roxbury Academy Salad Bar in by March 1!?

After meeting with West Roxbury Academy cafeteria managers Carol Melanson and supervisor Margie Pietroski, it looks like we might be in luck! Both ladies are super enthusiastic about the possibility of opening a salad bar. They're even open to meeting with students each month about deciding what kinds of foods should go on, as well as cultural food themes!
They're concerned, however, about students taking both a salad bar as an entree and a hot lunch (ie taking two for one), as well as general discipline issues.
To tackle this tricky issue, we're brainstorming how to build demand and responsibility for the salad bar by building Healthy Lunch Champions. A Healthy Lunch Champion is a student who helps serve and monitor the salad bar and gets his/her lunch for free! Healthy Lunch Champions are also eligible to meet with Carol as a part of the salad bar planning team.
Have something to say or want to be included in the process? Write a comment on the "Get Your Voice Heard" page or email us at sociedadlatinayco@gmail.com.
We will also be posting a sign up in the cafeteria this Friday, January 20!

Salad Bar Initiative in full swing!

It's January and it's time to get tough! At Sociedad, we're working hard on getting a salad bar in every BPS cafeteria. Here's why we think it's important:

  • salad bars give students options for our unique sense of taste
  • more fruits and veggies in our lunches mean healthier students!
  • cultural food items we love, like beans and different fruits, can easily be incorporated into salad bars
  • local foods we love (even ones from a school garden!) can also be used in salad bars
We're working on contacting cafeteria managers, staff and students in the BPS district, as well as meeting with Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) head honchos Shamil Mohammed and Michael Peck, to make this happen.

This week, we are meeting with Urban Science, South Boston Complex (Green Academy + Excel) and Madison Park Schools to see if we can spark some magic! We'll also be talking to Burke later on in the month.

We can't do it without your support! Fill out our poll and send us an email with your story or comment about school lunch. Student voices make an impact!
